Storing collectibles

I thought I should write a bit about the storage of collectible models. This applies not only to toy trains but other collectibles. Hopefully it will help preserve your collecables in the condition that they are currently in.

Please remember that this article is a work in progress and any information YOU can add would be great. Please email it to me.

Boxes
Boxes are a bit hard to decide what to do with. On the one hand they help protect the models from dust and to a certain extent from knocks and scrapes but on the other hand the acid content in the boxes can damage the models stored in them. I personally store the boxes in a cuboard an display the toys I collect so this is not a problem for me.
Bubble Wrap and News paper
No don't store your models in bubble wrap or news paper. While both are good for shipping items both can leave marks on the surface of the models you are trying to protect!
The Sun
This is obvious but should be repeated here. Try to keep your models out of the sun as it will fade certain and paint. Remember you don's see the Mona Lisa stored in the sun!
Dust
This is one of the harshest things on a models surface. When wiped off it can cause the surface to be scratched. Remove carefully.
Water/Moisture
This will cause metal to oxidize. I try to use those oxidize bags that come with some things to keep them dry. A dehumidifier would also be an option but they can be expensive to run.
So how do you store models?
The best way to store models would be in a clean room. As most collectors don't have a 'clean room in their house. I suggest you display them behind glass this reduces the amount of dust and if you use some of those silica bags moisture too. It also allows you to store the boxes separately. But remember they are your toys and everyone has different ideas on how to store them.
This information is provided 'as is' and is just observations by me.
